Homemade Hamburger Buns – Easy, Soft and Delicious

This homemade hamburger bun recipe yields soft, fluffy, and slightly sweet buns with a golden crust. Perfect for burgers or sandwiches, they are easy to make and far superior to store-bought versions.

Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 15–18 minutes
Servings: 8 buns

Ingredients:

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tablespoons butter (softened)
  • 1 egg yolk + 1 tablespoon milk (for brushing)
  • Sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Activate the yeast:
In a bowl, mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Prepare the dough:
Add the egg, butter, salt, and gradually mix in the flour. Knead until you get a soft and slightly sticky dough (about 8–10 minutes).
  3. First rise:
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  4. Shape the buns:
Divide the dough into 8 equal portions. Shape each into a smooth ball and place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, leaving space between them.
  5. Second rise:
Cover and let them rise again for about 30–40 minutes, until puffy.
  6. Brush and top:
Brush the tops with the egg yolk and milk mixture. Sprinkle sesame seeds if desired.
  7. Bake:
Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 15–18 minutes, or until golden brown.
  8. Cool and serve:
Let the buns cool slightly before slicing. Enjoy with your favorite burger fillings!
